RoleAbout Competition at Woodbridge High School  October 16, 2021

Irvine Takes Top Two Honors in Musical Theatre Solo, Places 3rd in Comedic Group Scene!

An Award Winning Weekend for Irvine Drama at the RoleAbout Competition at Woodbridge High School on October 16, 2021

300 Competitors from 16 Southern California High Schools gathered at Woodbridge High School on Saturday for RoleAbout - an all day Festival celebrating Theatrical Performances and Technical Design Entries.

Irvine High School Drama brought 12 entries to the competition, along with 2 student judges who criticized and evaluated the performances, and 4 volunteers who assisted the Woodbridge students in pulling off the very successful event.

Of the 12 Irvine entries, 4 were chosen to compete in the finals.

In the Musical Theatre Solo Category, there were 80 entries in total for the day; the most popular category at the festival. Irvine Seniors Cece Labowe and Sarah Adams took First and Second Prize bringing everyone to tears with their honest and gut-wrenching takes on “How Did We Come to This?” from The Wild Party and “No One Else” from Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. They were both placed in the same group at 8:30am, and were the last two to sing in the final round as well. They most definitely saved the best for last as their wasn’t a dry eye from anyone who witnessed these two sing the finals.

We also brought the laughs! Our upcoming Fall production of Noises Off was showcased in the Contemporary Comedic Scene and took Third Prize out of 15 schools that entered this category. The cast included Ryder Harris, Tylee Humphrey, Shamini Balasubramanian, Standy Johnson, Lorenzo Isacs, Sarah Adams, Cece Labowe and Lily Matthey. The outdoor elements tested these actors as they were placed into a shoebox of a performance space for the finals with busses loading and unloading nearby!

Other finalists to note in the Musical Duet Category Cece Labowe and Lily Matthey gave tight harmonies and wonderful characterization to Wicked’s “What is This Feeling?” and Senior Ash Kandala was a standout in his detailed and complete Scenic Design presentation on his monster set that is being completed for Noises Off. Ash used his architecture, engineering, and construction experience to get a two-story, rotating set built on our stage.

All-in-all I couldn’t be more proud of our Irvine Drama Students. It was a beautiful day of Theatre that we all needed after being away for almost two years. I hope that we can continue to grow in the numbers of students that attend these competitions and the categories that we compete in!
